after a couple of outings with my german buddies, i find that they are alot more open to discussing social issues (e.g. aging population, immigrants, studying abroad etc.). its not that they're more aware (i'm sure singaporeans are aware of such issues too), but they seem to think more about things and actually have a defensible opinion which they are open to discuss. a very nice refreshing change! :)
a couple of things i forgot to add about December Rains:
It absolutely reeked of Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress. I caught forbidden city in Sec 2, when the school subsidized the ticket, and was so enamoured with it I absolutely had to watch it again when they staged it again a few years later; and also recorded the tv screening they had.
It was at Forbidden City that I fell in love with Kit Chan. And so I absolutely had to attend the musical Kit Chan was again appearing in after such a long hiatus- December Rains.
A while into the musical, it hit me that alot of the musical motives, the effects, and even the way the musical was staged was very reminiscent of Forbidden City.
Granted, the setting was very similar: a time of turbulence and revolution, centering around a woman who found and lost love etc; and many of the people involved were involved in both musicals. But it was a bit too similar...
Though given that December Rains was first staged in 1996, and I was only 7 then, it might be the other way round. And there's too little documentary on the 1996 production for me to make any comparison.
Nevertheless, I was thoroughly enthralled and entranced by the stunningly brilliant performance. (it would have been 101% perfect if the director had been more picky about the cohesiveness of all the ensemble pieces though)
