Just finished watching The White Countess. It received pitiful reviews. But I found it a brilliantly stitched together film, with the best pedigree cast of Redgraves one could ever get. (Vanessa Redgrave, Lynne Redgrave, Natasha Richardson) The changes in tone and emotion slowly creeps up on one as one is subsumed into the slow meandering but captivating flow of the film. I also very much appreciated the reality of the time and place that the filmmakers took care to portray. The details in the fashion of the time; the tasteful distinction between the glamour and the poverty; the reality of the japanese invasion. Not a film for the 'modern hearted'.
